Frequently Asked Questions from ABC School Teachers, Administrators, and Staff
1.) So, we will be told exactly how to set up these structures in our classrooms? No. I will share with you the structures of Conscious Discipline, and you will learn about them from the website, youtube videos, and books. You will then take them and make them your own. While using autonomy in the design of your structures and setting them up in a way that works for you, your students, and your classroom space, you should make sure they are set in a way that meets the intent and function of what it's designed for. For example, the safe place is NOT a punishment or time out area. It's function is to provide a place for students to self-regulate and get it together so they can move from the lower centers of their brain to the higher centers..
2.) Do we HAVE to implement all of this in this school year? No. This year is a learning curve year for everyone. Some of you will be eager to learn the theory and practices of Conscious Discipline and will explore this online and ask for help with it, while others will be too overwhelmed in other areas of their lives to take this on full force. Wherever you are in your journey, is perfectly okay. It's exciting that we have so many staff members eager to learn as much as possible, but it's also very understandable that there is reluctance in some classrooms. I suggest you take it slow this year, and absorb as much of this as you are ready for and just enjoy the journey, as it will prove to be a very fulfilling form of personal and professional growth.
